FAQ Anesthesia

How long can I still use the soda lime? When do I have to change the water trap and why? Here you will find the answers to lot of questions about Anesthesia.

How long can I still use the soda lime?

Utilization time of granulated lime with high dust content - 17 hours
versus
Drägersorb CLIC 800 Plus = 27 hours
Service life in everyday clinical practice is about 30% longer than for the rechargeable absorber.

When do I have to change the water trap and why?

Recommended exchange interval: Ensure regular exchange every 4 weeks at the latest.
Caution: The water trap is to be exchanged immediately when
• the water trap is dirty (tank shows contamination)
• emptying it does not eliminate the respective error message on the monitor
• the capnogram (CO2 waveform) is divergent

Nonobservance can damage the gas measuring module which can lead to failure of the gas measurement.

When do I have to change the O2 sensor and why?

Dräger Medical has a range of different O2 sensors (Oxytrace, Fast Oxygen Sensor and O2 Capsule). The most important ones are the Fast Oxygen Sensor and the O2 Capsule as they are to be changed by the customer.
The Fast Oxygen Sensor (part number 6850930) is used in devices like the Primus and has a service life of 6 months.
The O2 Capsule (part number 6850645) is, for example, used in the entire Evita family and has a guaranteed service life of 12 months.
Both sensors contain lead, which wears down during use. For this reason, the customer has to replace the sensors every now and then.
As soon as the voltage of the sensors is below 11 mV, the device displays "O2 sensor INOP". The sensor must then be exchanged.

What is the meaning of NR or SI on the manual breathing bags?

NR = Natural Rubber
SI = Silicone

How long can the O2 cylinder still be used? How can I calculate the remaining time?

Calculation of the cylinder content:
Available volume = cylinder volume x pressure Gauge display / ambient pressure

Example:
Cylinder volume 11 L
Pressure gauge display 60 bar
Ambient pressure 1 bar
Available volume 660 L
=> This means, when you remove 5 L/min from the cylinder of this example, it can still be used for 132 minutes.

What needs to be observed when exchanging the cylinder?

Close gas cylinder, relieve pressure reducer, remove pressure reducer and screw it on the new cylinder by hand without tools.
Slowly open gas cylinder. The pressure reducer is sealed by the cylinder pressure so no tool is necessary! Open slowly, as sudden pressure surges can generate heat and thus trigger a deflagration.

Why can the (rusty) threads not be greased?

Because oil and grease facilitate intensive burning when in contact with oxygen. There is a great danger of spontaneous combustion and user and patient can be hurt.
